Hibernian manager Nick Montgomery admits that he would ‘love’ to sign Manchester United defender Will Fish on a permanent deal.

The centre-back re-joined the Scottish side on a season-long loan deal in the summer and it is clear they want to keep him at the club for the long-term future.

Speaking to the Edinburgh Evening News, Montgomery said: “I would love to keep Will, not just this season but on a permanent deal. The kid is still just 20-years-old, and he’s growing every week. I think his performances belie his age. He plays like a seasoned professional. To watch him in training every day and see the effort he puts into games, he’s really low maintenance. I think he’s got a massive future ahead of him.”

It remains to be seen what United have planned for Fish, but that’s what it will come down to at the end of the season. Erik ten Hag and his coaches will need to watch the player closely, or take him back for pre-season, before making a decision on his future.

Of course, it bodes well that Hibernian want to keep Fish beyond his loan deal, but will they be able to prevent interest from elsewhere? It probably helps their case that Fish has enjoyed playing regular football under Montgomery.

United have had a number of injury problems in defence this season, but reports suggest Ten Hag wants to sign a new centre-back in 2024. Fish will be keeping one eye on what is happening at United to try evaluate whether he will ever get a chance to impress at Old Trafford.
