There were a lot of question marks about Chelsea’s decision to recall Andrey Santos and Cesare Casadei from loan this month.

Both were expected to be sent somewhere new, but there has not been great progress on that front.

Santos is off playing with Brazil, and not much has been heard from Casadei either. Nizaar Kinsella’s piece in the Evening Standard claims that Chelsea are intending to keep both at the club for the rest of this season:

“Having let Ian Maatsen leave on loan, Chelsea are expected to boost the squad by keeping hold of youngsters Deivid Washington, Andrey Santos, Diego Moreira and Cesare Casadei, who have all either previously been on loan or subject to loan interest this month.”

To us that would be a huge mistake – Casadei was playing regularly for Leicester and getting the minutes he needed. Santos was not featuring at all, but there were plenty of teams he could have been sent to where he would have played.

We will have to wait until Thursday to see if Kinsella is right, but there’s certainly no urgency to get these young midfielders moved on, that’s for sure.
