Alan Shearer has empathised with Marcus Rashford for what he deems a lack of service when the attacker is playing up front.

With Rasmus Hojlund sidelined, Manchester United’s goalscoring duties have largely fallen onto the shoulders of Rashford, who is one of the only available forwards with previous experience playing as a No.9.

It’s evident when he’s deployed there that he’s somewhat out of sorts and would prefer to be on his usual left flank, but will likely continue to be called upon until Hojlund returns from his injury setback.

United booked their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals – where they’ll face Liverpool at home – midweek after a tightly contested 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest, though their performance across the 90 minutes left a lot to be desired.

Fans were left frustrated again at the team’s lacklustre, uninspired showing, with the deadlock only being broken in the 89th minute through a Casemiro header, which came from a set-piece.

Erik ten Hag’s chosen front three for the tie were Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. The latter is yet to be named in a Premier League starting 11 this calendar year but did start against Newport County in the last round of the cup.

Shearer voices concerns over attacking trio’s suitability

Analysing United’s victory on The Rest Is Football, Shearer, who ranks as the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer, reacted: “Mind you, you know what, in that team… I’d get bloody frustrated in that team.

“Playing with Antony on the right who keeps on forever coming in on his left, Garnacho on the left, who keeps on forever coming in on his right, I would get frustrated at times as well.”
