Inter Milan: Christian Eriksen 'in excellent physical and mental shape' after cardiac arrest

Reports emerged Tuesday that midfielder Christian Eriksen had returned to Italian Serie A club Inter Milan and met with Inter director Beppe Marotta for the first time since the Denmark star suffered his cardiac arrest on June 12.

On Wednesday, the club provided a positive update on the 29-year-old's recovery.

"The Danish midfielder met the club directors, the coach, team-mates and all of the staff present. Eriksen is doing well and is in excellent physical and mental shape," Inter explained.

"He will now follow the recovery programme put forward by Danish doctors in Copenhagen, who will also co-ordinate the clinical follow-up. The Inter medical staff will naturally be kept informed and up to date throughout the process."

Eriksen collapsed during his nation's UEFA European Championship opener against Finland and was resuscitated via CPR and a defibrillator. He was later fitted with a defibrillator in the hospital, and it remains unclear if he'll be able to resume his professional career anywhere.

Joe Shread of Sky Sports notes no decision on Eriksen's potential return to competitive action is expected for at least another six months. Darren Richman of The Athletic reported in July that Italian rules may prevent the playmaker from resuming his career in the country unless his defibrillator is removed. Eriksen could, however, pursue a transfer to a league located in a nation that doesn't enforce those guidelines, such as England or Holland.
