Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi feels that his team played a great match despite failing to beat Napoli in Serie A yesterday.
The Nerazzurri coach spoke to InterTV after the match, a 1-1 draw at the San Siro, via FCInterNews.
Inter had naturally hoped to bounce back from their Champions League disappointment in midweek with a win over Napoli.
And in the first half, the Nerazzurri looked to be on course for exactly that.
A goal from versatile wingback Matteo Darmian gave Inter a deserved 1-0 advantage at halftime.
The Nerazzurri looked to be confident and in control against the reigning Italian champions.
And in the second half, even as the Partenopei pushed to try and respond with a goal, Inter were able to hold out.
Prior to yesterday evening, Inter had never conceded in the final fifteen minutes of a Serie A match this season. That seemed to be a good omen as the clock crossed that barrier.
But it proved to be a switch-off from a corner that was Inter’s undoing.
Former Nerazzurri defender Juan Jesus was the one to benefit. The Brazilian got a free header at virtually point blank range in order to get Napoli back into the match.
Inzaghi: Disappointed Not To Beat Napoli, But Inter Played Well
From the perspective of Nerazzurri coach Inzaghi, the performance gave him every reason to be happy even if it wasn’t quite enough to get the result.
He commented that “The guys played a great match against a high-level team.”
“The reigning Italian champions, and a team who have a lot of quality.”
Inzaghi gave the view that “We played the first half and then the start of the second very well.”
“Then in the last twenty minutes, we lost some compactness between the lines.”
“Napoli became more attacking then,” the Inter coach continued. “But they didn’t create anything in the penalty area.”
“Then unfortunately we conceded a corner, and conceded a goal from it. And clearly, we’re disappointed that we didn’t win.”
Of the performances from the wingbacks, Inzaghi said that “I’m fortunate in that I’m able to alternate them.”
“We also have Carlos Augusto and Juan Cuadrado, who are out injured but will be back after the international break.”
