Beppe Bergomi feels that striker and captain Lautaro Martinez is a “symbol” of Inter Milan’s Serie A triumph this season.
The former defender and Nerazzurri captain spoke to Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews.
Bergomi is certainly a player who knows a thing or two about wearing the captain’s armband at Inter.
The former defender captained the Nerazzurri for over a decade. He also wore the armband for the Italian national team for a period.
Lautaro Martinez is not anywhere near that sort of longevity yet.
The Argentine is coming to the end of his first ever season as Inter captain. He inherited the armband from Samir Handanovic last summer.
Nevertheless, the feeling is that Martinez could have many more years as captain.
And moreover, that they could be successful ones.
Bergomi Hails Lautaro Martinez As “Symbol” Of Inter Serie A Title
As far as which player he considers a “symbol” of Inter’s Serie A title victory this season, Bergomi answered “I’d say Lautaro.”
“In recent years, when he hasn’t been scoring, he’s let his head drop.”
“Now he’s still useful to the team in other ways,” Bergomi notes.
“He’s at the wars for the team. He goes and breaks up fights on the pitch.”
“He’s taken on a special leadership,” the former captain said of the current one.
As far as Inter’s Championms League campaign, Bergomi remarked that “I don’t see the elimination as a negative.”
“The focus was on the league,” he argued.
“And then, Inter are not yet at the level of City and Real Madrid. But they can get there.”
As far as who he thinks is the “Bergomi” of this Inter, the former captain said that “Some might say Bastoni.”
“He’s an exceptional player. But he’s more technical than I was.”
“I’d say Acerbi,” Bergomi continued. “In terms of his concentration and staying switched-on, he reminds me of myself.”
“When he arrived from Lazio there were a lot of groans. But I said, this guy has balls.”
Meanwhile, Bergomi also gave his thoughts on what Inter should do in the transfer market this summer.
“If Inter keep all the big names, that’s already a good base.”
“Then I’d look for a quick defender,” he went on. “This season we’ve allowed a few counterattacks, a player like that is needed.”
“Plus, I’d bring in a young striker to develop. And the icing on the cake would be a physical midfielder.”
