Legendary former Inter striker Diego Milito is confident about the kind of end that this current Nerazzurri side can have to the season, including in Europe’s top club competition.
Speaking to Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, the Argentine gave his thoughts on the Nerazzurri’s goals for the season including in the Champions League.
Whilst the league title now looks to be an extraordinarily tough ask for Inter given the gap behind Napoli in the Serie A table and the Partenopei’s breathtaking form, the team won’t have entirely given up hope particularly following the league leaders’ loss to Napoli.
Meanwhile, everything is to play for in the Coppa Italia where the Nerazzurri have a semifinal tie against Juventus on the way.
The same is true in the Champions League, although the sense is that this will be a much tougher proposition, starting with a round of sixteen second leg away to Porto.
Milito, however, has faith in what this team is capable of.
Of where Inter are at this stage of the season, the former striker said that “They’re second in the table, in the semifinals of the Coppa Italia, they’re playing for a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League – Inter’s season is is hardly thrown away.”
“Of course, Inter must always aim to win,” he continued.
“But in Serie A, I think it’s more to the credit of Napoli that the gap is so big, rather than a mark against Inter.”
Milito reflected that “Inter have dropped a few points along the way, and perhaps they shouldn’t have.”
“But it doesn’t seem as though it’s been a bad season at all,” he continued.
The former striker noted that “The Champions League is always very tough, and now it’s at the hardest stage as it’s the knockouts.”
“But I’ll just say this,” the Argentine continued, “there are no limits to what this team do.”
“After Porto, anything can happen in the quarterfinals.”
Of how striker Lautaro Martinez’s form has been, Milito said that “The numbers speak for themselves, he’s having an excellent season.”
“After the World Cup, he got an incredible boost and that’s something that he’s passed on to the rest of the squad, he’s become more of a leader, it’s clear how much influence he has on this team.”
