Inter Milan team activities suspended, match postponed due to COVID outbreak

Inter Milan has paused all team activities and postponed an upcoming match against Sassuolo, which was scheduled to be played Saturday, following a COVID-19 outbreak.

An official announcement from the club identified Stefan de Vrij and Matias Vecino as testing positive, joining goalkeeper Samir Handanovic and defender Danilo D'Ambrosioand, whose positive results were announced on Wednesday. The team said that the four are quarantined in their homes.

The team also said that players have been "prohibited from fulfilling any call-ups to their respective national teams." Inter said that the entire team will be tested again on Monday, as players were due to join up with their national teams following the weekend's match for the start of the World Cup qualifying.

"On Monday 22 March, the whole team will be re-swabbed and tested before the eventual resumption of activities," the team announced.

Inter is currently bidding for its first Series A title in more than a decade, holding a nine-point lead over second-place AC Milan and a 10-point lead over third-place Juventus.

This is the second outbreak that Inter has experienced this season, with multiple players testing positive for COVID-19 back in October. The club is hoping that the outbreak is not as widespread this time around.
