Inter have announced that the out-of-favor forward Joaquin Correa has joined Olympique Marseille on a season-long loan with an option to buy. According to the club’s official statement, the Italians have installed several performance-related clauses in the deal that would trigger a mandatory buyout option.

Correa followed in the footsteps of Simone Inzaghi, who left Lazio to take charge of Inter in the summer of 2021. But despite enjoying a dream debut against Hellas Verona, the 29-year-old could never find his feet at Giuseppe Meazza. Recurring injury problems didn’t help his cause either.

Inzaghi insisted on Correa’s arrival after taking over the managerial reins at Inter. However, he nailed the Argentine to the bench last season. Correa found himself behind Edin Dzeko, Romelu Lukaku, and Lautaro Martinez in the pecking order in 2022/23. In spite of the Bosnian’s exit, his future at Meazza was dead in the water long ago.

Marcus Thuram’s arrival on a free transfer, followed by Marko Arnautovic’s switch from Bologna, closed the door for Correa. The Inter outcast will have a chance to rekindle his career in Ligue 1. He should take Alexis Sanchez’s place at the Stade Velodrome.

After a decent season-long spell at Marseille, the Chilean veteran has completed a shock return to Inter. Sanchez spent three years at the club before severing ties with Nerazzurri last summer. Given he’s already 34, it’s odd that the Italians have decided to bring him back.
