Referee Daniele Chiffi got it right by deciding not to award Inter a penalty in the first half of their Coppa Italia win over Atalanta yesterday evening.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who argue that the referee made the correct decision that the handball by La Dea defender Rafael Toloi was not a penalty, whilst they suggest that the official was very lenient all match.

Inter players appealed furiously after the ball clearly struck the hand of Atalanta defender Toloi after a shot by Lautaro Martinez.

However, the shot had deflected off of the player’s foot first, and so in the Gazzetta’s view, it was entirely the correct decision by Chiffi not to point to the spot, as it was not really an intentional movement.

Meanwhile, the newspaper argues, Chiffi was perhaps too lenient with letting play go, failing to whistle for a number of what looked to be fouls.
