Inter defender Matteo Darmian was his team’s outstanding performer in yesterday evening’s 1-0 Coppa Italia quarterfinal win over Atalanta.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who name the 33-year-old as the man of the match for capping off his tidy display with the match-winning goal.

Darmian played on the right of the back three against Atalanta as he had done against Cremonese over the weekend.

The former Manchester United and Parma man found the right balance between his defensive positioning and getting forward to support the attack, while his well-taken finish on his weaker foot proved decisive to send his team to the semifinals.

The Gazzetta gave Darmian a score of 7.5/10 for his performance in the player ratings for the match, the same grade given to midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu who controlled the tempo in a deep-lying midfield role.

Meanwhile, defender Stefan de Vrij was given a 7/10 score for a no-nonsense defensive display that was key to keeping a clean sheet against this free-scoring Atalanta team.
