As a future without Jurgen Klopp looms, Liverpool are doing everything in their power to ensure the club does not suffer a dip in form. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed two major updates for the Reds, revealing that Michael Edwards is set to return to the club while Bournemouth’s Richard Hughes will be appointed as Sporting Director this summer.

Romano reported: “Michael Edwards has reached an agreement with FSG as he returns to Liverpool as crucial figure to help with new project. After initial approach and new attempt revealed in the last two months, it’s now done. Richard Hughes will also join #LFC as part of new structure.” He also said: “Richard Hughes has already an agreement in place to join Liverpool, it will happen at the end of the season. After excellent job at Bournemouth with CEO Neill Blake, he’s gonna leave at the end of the season to sign for Liverpool. He’s part of Michael Edwards plan.”

Hughes’ potential appointment at Liverpool is not only a testament to his impressive track record but also to his close relationship with Edwards, their former sporting director. This relationship, forged during their time at Portsmouth, has played a pivotal role in Hughes’ career trajectory.

What Does Hughes Bring To Liverpool?

During his tenure at Bournemouth, he played a crucial role in reshaping the team’s management and recruitment strategies. He oversaw the appointment of key personnel, including head coaches like Andoni Iraola. Under Hughes’ guidance, the Cherries experienced a shift in recruitment focus, targeting younger talents from both domestic and international markets. The success stories include players like Tyrone Mings, Aaron Ramsdale, and David Brooks, who have excelled at Bournemouth and beyond.

Hughes’ contributions extend beyond player recruitment, as evidenced by the expansion of Bournemouth’s recruitment department under his leadership. His role, although not public-facing, was instrumental in providing support to the coaching staff and ensuring a cohesive approach to player acquisitions. Despite his low profile as a player, he has made a name for himself in the football world.
