Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag did not have the first half of the season they planned for. The Red Devils sit eighth in the Premier League table, one point ahead of the Blues. United have also had the heartbreak from their Champions League group to deal with. Jonathan Clauss is a player both clubs have targeted in the past, and it looks like he could be available for transfer.

Nizaar Kinsella tweeted an update on the transfer status of French right-back Clauss. He stated that the 31-year-old “could leave Marseille in January for as little as £8.5million.” A bargain considering that the veteran is a member of the French national team and has twice been in the Ligue 1 team of the year.

The Evening Standard further noted that Clauss has been a wanted man in the past: “The 31-year-old right-back previously attracted interest from Manchester United, Chelsea and Wolves in 2022 and Spanish giants Atletico Madrid last January.”

Clauss Career Recapped

Clauss played for several amateur clubs across France and Germany at the beginning of his career. It was not until 2018, eight years after his senior debut, that Arminia Bielefeld gave him the opportunity to play at a higher level. The following season, he helped lead them to promotion to the Bundesliga.

Lens purchased Clauss in 2020, and he was an immediate starter. During his tenure there, the right-back was selected – in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year twice in a row. At the end of the second season, Marseille signed him. A regular in manager Gennaro Gattuso’s starting lineup, his skills would be a great asset to Erik ten Hag or Mauricio Pochettino.
