Legendary Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero analyzes the action of the second leg between Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan.

The Nerazzurri bid the Champions League farewell on Wednesday night after falling short in penalty shootouts.

Simone Inzaghi’s men squandered a two-goal cushion on aggregate, allowing the Colchoneros to equalize the scoring and force extra time. Diego Simeone’s side kept their nerve to prevail in the shootouts.

Therefore, Del Piero was distraught after watching all three Serie A representatives exiting the competition in the Round of 16.

“It’s sad because in the Champions League, with Napoli and Inter we had good opportunities to advance,” said the Juventus icon during his appearance on CBS via FcInterNews.

“But it is important to look at the reality and understand why we missed these opportunities. If the others did better, then we have some work to do.”

Alessandro Del Piero Argues Inter Milan Entered The Match Too Late Vs Atletico Madrid

The 49-year-old argued that Inter had the tools to reach the quarter-finals. However, he rues the team’s approach on Wednesday.

Del Piero felt that the Nerazzurri only truly entered the match in the second half of extra time.

“Last year, it was crazy, you had three Italians in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and three finalists in the three European cups, it was unreal, to be honest.

“Inter, for the quality of the players and for the moment they are experiencing, deserved to be in the final eight. But you must earn it on the pitch. And this time, the coin flipped in favor of Atletico.

“The only regret Inter can have is that they started playing late, particularly in the second extra period.

“They could have done better during the match, because they had possession but only had opportunities on the counterattack.

“The Nerazzurri could have done better in possession.

“When it comes to penalties, sometimes it’s all about the luck. Sometimes you prepare better, but the goalkeeper makes great saves.

“At times, the fans give you an important advantage.”
