Legendary former Juventus and Roma midfielder Zbigniew Boniek feels that while Inter were at one point stronger than AC Milan, Rossoneri coach Stefano Pioli has significantly made up the gap.
Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Boniek argued that Pioli has gotten Milan to the point where they are on par with their city rivals which was not necessarily the case last season.
Inter and Milan fought it out for the Serie A title for all of last season, and whilst the Rossoneri brought home the title with a perfect end to the campaign, the feeling among many was that the Nerazzurri were the stronger team on their day.
Boniek more or less agrees with that assessment for last season, but feels that based on the start of this season Milan have found another gear whilst Inter have stood still.
The Pole credits Rossoneri coach Pioli, formerly of Inter as well as Lazio, Bologna, and Fiorentina, for finding a way to make up the ground in the city rivalry.
“Pioli has become a complete coach,” he said, “he’s carried on the Milan project, won the title based on not on individuals but on the group.”
“And managing a project collectively is not easy,” he added.
Boniek argued that “Last year Inter were stronger in terms of their squad, but he managed Milan in such a way as to see the strength of the group prevail.”
