Maurizio Sarri has stepped down verbally from his post as Lazio manager. He’ll have a meeting with Claudio Lotito on Tuesday afternoon to formalize his decision and eventually ratify his contract rescission. He’s tied to the Biancocelesti until 2025, Alfredo Pedullà informs.

The club is set to accept the choice and hire a caretaker manager. The early favorite is Tommaso Rocchi, who currently helms their U-14 team. According to Tuttomercatoweb, the boss didn’t perceive enough support from the players following the loss to Udinese. The front office ordered a punitive retreat ahead of the next match, but the gaffer made the call before its start. Per Gianluca Di Marzio, Miroslav Klose, who would accept a short-term deal, is also an option.

Sarri chose to resign after the third consecutive loss in Serie A and the fourth in a row since Bayern Munich prevailed in the return leg of the Champions League’s Round of 16, causing Lazio to be eliminated despite a great showing in the first match.

The Biancocelesti are currently ninth in the standings, 11 points behind fourth place, but still potentially in the running for the secondary European competitions. They made it to the Coppa Italia semifinals, where they will face Juventus. They finished second in 2022/2023.

Our Take on Lazio and Sarri

The success in the cups protected him even though their performances in Serie A have been pedestrian at best. Their hierarchy shouldn’t mess about and get a precious head start on a busy coaching carousel.
