Lazio’s medical staff reportedly misdiagnosed the calf injury suffered by Danilo Cataldi, exacerbating the issue and ending his season early.

The 28-year-old Italian midfielder has featured prominently this season under Maurizio Sarri, proving himself a key part of the system and an anchor in front of the defence.

Cataldi was forced off the pitch in the 50th minute of Lazio’s 3-1 loss to Inter at the end of April and has been sidelined ever since, missing the last three consecutive league matches.

As reported by Il Messaggero (via LazioNews24), Lazio’s medical staff believed that Cataldi had only suffered a minor injury – a calf edema, or build-up of fluid in the tissue. They seemingly missed a two-centimetre lesion.

This came to light when the Italian midfielder tried to perform some simple training exercises on the pitch, something which left him in severe pain.

Maurizio Sarri is reportedly furious with the Lazio medical staff and will now have to rely on Matias Vecino and Marcos Antonio for the final games of this season.
