Liverpool clinch Premier League title after Chelsea's win over Manchester City

For the first time in 30 years, Liverpool are champions of England's top flight.

Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, a result that guaranteed Liverpool their first title in the Premier League competition that began with the 1992-93 campaign.

Liverpool last finished atop the first division in 1990.

American Christian Pulisic opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 36th minute after he completed a brilliant run and then struck a textbook finish that hit the back of the net:

City's Kevin De Bruyne equalized when he curled a free-kick into the top corner 10 minutes after the break:

However, City defender Fernandinho was sent off in the 77th minute after a VAR review found him guilty of a blatant hand ball.

Willian converted from the spot for the match-winner:

Thursday's celebrations were three months in the waiting for Liverpool supporters, as their beloved club held a commanding 25-point advantage over City atop the EPL table when all of English football stopped in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Fears England could follow the Netherlands and void the season to avoid legal battles over relegation and other table spots were eased when the Premier League returned to play on June 17.

Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the 2019 Champions League Final and are the reigning holders of that trophy.
