Luca Koleosho could still join USMNT despite Canada call-up?

As ESPN's Sam Marsden and Moises Llorens explained, Espanyol forward Luca Koleosho made history last weekend when the 17-year-old originally from Connecticut became the youngest American-born player to make a La Liga debut when he was subbed on during what became a scoreless draw at Granada.

Koleosho, born to a Nigerian father and an Italian-Canadian mother, was called up by the Canada men's national team for Nations League fixtures in June, but it appears he hasn't yet made a final decision on which country he'll represent down the road. Marsden and Llorens report that Koleosho remains open to playing for the United States men's national team and may not announce his plans until the end of next month's camp.

Koleosho previously spent time with American and Canadian youth teams but had never before earned a senior call-up until earlier this week.

"Players can switch if they have played no more than three competitive matches at senior level prior to them turning 21, but they have to wait two years until after the last appearance," ESPN notes. "If a player appears in a World Cup match or a continental finals such as the European Championship, they become ineligible to change their national side."

Koleosho spent four years with Spanish side Reus before he signed for Espanyol in 2020. It's unclear how much the highly rated teenager fits in the plans of Team USA, if at all, ahead of the World Cup that begins this coming November. Canada also qualified for Qatar.
