Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi was nominated for this year’s Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award on Monday. Messi has won the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award just once in his career, as he took home the honor in 2020, becoming the first footballer ever to be voted the winner of the award.

Luis Figo will be among the former athletes who will have a final say as to just who will win this prestigious honor. Figo has been a Laureus World Sports Academy Member since 2015.

Figo recently took some time to speak about Messi’s success in 2022, where, although he did not reveal whether he will vote for the PSG star, he did touch on just what impresses him the most about the Argentine’s legacy.

“What impressed me is the continuity year after year of the high perform that he always shows because in my experience, I know that sometimes is not easy,” Figo said. “… To maintain this level year after year is very uncommon.”

Messi was a standout performer for both PSG and Argentina last year, from winning Ligue 1 to leading La Albiceleste to triumph at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
