Manchester United need to assess Luke Shaw’s fitness ahead of the start of the season after he played for England at Euro 2020 with broken ribs.
According to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, the England full-back sustained the injury against Germany but played through the pain barrier to help Gareth Southgate’s team reach the final at Wembley.
Shaw suffered the blow to his ribs before the quarter-finals, so he played a further three matches on top of that, with what sounds like a serious injury.
It is incredible that his level of performance never dropped (scoring in the final against Italy), but I don’t think there were too many smiley faces at Old Trafford after learning he’d broken ribs.
The report stresses that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his medical staff would have preferred Shaw to have returned to Carrington immediately for scans to determine the extent of the damage, although after playing in the final he was granted holiday.
This is far from ideal as Solskjaer prepares the team for the new season. Hopefully Shaw will be fully recovered in time for the opening game of the season against Leeds United.
United also look like they will be without Marcus Rashford for the start of the season, with the forward pondering over whether he needs an operation on a shoulder injury.
