Major League Soccer 'unlikely' to resume in mid-May

It appears North American soccer fans will be without their top-flight league longer than first planned.

On Tuesday, MLS provided an official update on the league's current season during the coronavirus pandemic.

Similar to the four biggest professional sports in North America, MLS suspended play in March after multiple NBA players tested positive for coronavirus. MLS clubs have played only two games in the current season, and the league originally intended to halt play for 30 days as of March 12.

An unnamed Philadelphia Union player tested positive for the virus after the league suspended the season. New York City FC and the Seattle Sounders were also directly affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

Earlier this week, MLS commissioner Don Garber told ESPN analyst Taylor Twellman he was considering multiple options for the league's return.

"From tournament formats and neutral locations, ultimately playing an abridged regular season, but doing everything to get as many games," Garber said.

Garber also told Twellman games would likely be played in empty venues.

On April 13, ESPN's Mark Ogden reported that the Barclays Premier League hoped to resume play on June 6. German football competitions the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 could return to the pitch in early May.
