Manchester United are edging closer to signing Raphael Varane and an agreement in principle has been reached with the player’s entourage, according to reports.

The 28-year-old is due back from holiday this week, which could clear up questions over his future. Varane has just one year remaining on his contract at Real Madrid and despite losing Sergio Ramos earlier this summer, the Spanish club could be set to see another star leave.

According to journalist Julien Maynard , an agreement in principle has now been struck between Manchester United and Raphael Varane, with only an agreement between the two clubs left before a deal is done.

The journalist adds that Real Madrid and United remain in negotiations and that Varane wants to make a move to the Premier League but will not go into an ‘arm wrestle with his club.

The former Lens man is said to want a happy ending to his 10-year stay in Spain, rather than force himself out and fracture relationships.
