Manchester City avoids disaster by rallying to draw with West Ham

Manchester City needs only a win next weekend over Aston Villa to be Premier League champions, but a 2-2 draw Sunday against West Ham United nearly turned into a disaster for City.

West Ham led 2-0 at halftime after Jarrod Bowen scored a pair of first-half goals.

A loss for City would've opened up the door for Liverpool to climb into a tie for first at the top of the Premier League table. But Jack Grealish scored early in the second half to cut the deficit to one. Then in the 69th minute, City pulled even with a free-kick that was headed in for an own goal by West Ham's Vladimir Coufal.

West Ham missed several opportunities in the second half at scoring a third goal, but managed to fend off a penalty kick in the final minutes that could've secured three points for City.

With the draw, City now has a four-point lead over Liverpool and would clinch the Premier League title if the latter loses Tuesday to Southampton. City's season will end next weekend with its match against Aston Villa.
