Coming off a fourth consecutive Premier League title, Manchester City has yet to make a big splash in the summer transfer window but has done some selling to acquire some funds for when that big fish comes around.

On Friday, the Citizens announced they had acquired some more cash as they have sold a disappointing defender to Real Sociedad.

According to a post from the organization of X, Sergio Gomez has been sold to Real Sociedad for €10 million ($12.979 million), with a 30% sell-on clause, entitling the blue and white to 30% of the fee if Gomez were to be transferred out of Real Sociedad.

The 23-year-old never quite found his footing at the Etihad, constantly finding himself benched in favor of Joško Gvardiol and Nathan Aké at the left back position. Gomez ultimately only appeared 38 times for Manchester City during his two-year stint, making just two starts and 16 substitute appearances in the Premier League.

Despite that, Gomez will leave the Citizens as a six-time trophy winner. He was part of Manchester City’s treble-winning squad in 2022-23 and the blue and white’s UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Championship and Premier League title-winning squads.

“It’s time to leave Manchester City, but I’d like to thank everyone at the CFA for their support and guidance during my time at the club,” Gomez said.“Being part of such a talented, ambitious and successful squad was a true honor and winning a host of major trophies, including the treble, is something I will never forget and will always look back fondly on. I am excited for this new adventure but I wish Pep Guardiola and the players every success in the future.”

With Gomez now gone, the blue and white need a backup left-back and could use some of the transfer fee received for the Spanish international to do just that. However, time will tell if that move occurs in this transfer window or the next.
