Manchester City has suffered another injury blow during the international break. This time, versatile defender Manuel Akanji withdrew from Switzerland’s 1-nil victory over Ireland due to a knock. It is yet another injury concern for Pep Guardiola’s side. They take on Arsenal in a crucial Premier League clash this weekend at the Etihad Stadium.

Switzerland manager Murat Yakin confirmed that Akanji had picked up a knock that forced him to miss last night’s win over Ireland. There have been no further updates on the injury status of Manchester City’s versatile defender. It is expected that Pep Guardiola will have an update on Akanji’s status and that of several other players who have picked injury concerns during the international break. Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Matheus Nunes will all return with injury concerns ahead of this weekend’s clash with Arsenal.

The news of Manuel Akanji picking up a knock is a blow to Manchester City. With his ability to play across the back four, he is an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s squad. Akanji rarely lets his team down and has become a key player for City since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund.

There may also be an issue for Pep Guardiola as to who plays at right-back this weekend. Kyle Walker’s injury isn’t as bad as first feared. But he does appear to be in doubt for Sunday’s clash against Mikel Arteta’s side. Akanji would be the number one contender to play at right-back if City’s captain doesn’t come up for Sunday’s match at the Etihad. Rico Lewis may be the last man standing for the role as it stands currently.

A further update on the status of the Manchester City squad is expected when Pep Guardiola fronts the media on Friday.
