Jeremie Frimpong could be the subject of a tug-of-war contest in the transfer market this summer.

The former Celtic right-back joined Bayer Leverkusen five years ago and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

According to The Sun, Manchester United and Man City are keen on the highly-rated Netherlands international, who has a one-off £35 million release clause that can only be activated this summer.

Germany’s champions-elect Leverkusen want to keep Frimpong, but there is little that can be done if either Manchester club triggers the release clause.

He already spent over a decade at City’s academy before joining. This, however, means Frimpong would be classed as homegrown and academy-trained.

Frimpong is under contract at Leverkusen until 2028.

Potential blow for Dalot?

Diogo Dalot has been United’s primary right-back all season. The Portuguese full-back has been in top form and looks to have done enough to edge Aaron Wan-Bissaka out of his preferred role.

That said, Dalot could do with greater competition at right-back and Frimpong is a player I think would provide that. Both of them can play on either flank which is a bonus for any manager.

A new right-back joining should be seen as healthy competition rather than a blow for Dalot.
