MLS: Orlando City's Jonathan Suarez-Cortes arrested on sexual assault charge

Major League Soccer side Orlando City Soccer Club has found itself part of a disturbing story ahead of the upcoming season.

As Katie Rice and David Harris reported for the Orlando Sentinel, Orlando City defender Jonathan Suarez-Cortes and his brother were arrested late Tuesday on charges that they sexually assaulted a woman at their apartment on Sunday.

Orlando City acquired Suarez-Cortes, 24, on loan from Mexican team Queretaro FC earlier this month. MLS announced Wednesday afternoon that he's been suspended.

"Suarez has been suspended pending investigations by MLS and the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office," the league said in a brief statement. "Major League Soccer will remain in close communication with the Orlando City SC, local law enforcement, and the MLS Players Association during this investigation."

Orlando City also released a statement:

"Late Tuesday night, Orlando City SC became aware that defender Jonathan Suárez was arrested in Osceola County. The club takes these allegations very seriously and is currently gathering more information. No further comment will be provided by the club until additional investigation of the alleged incident is complete."

According to an affidavit, the woman in question said she and a friend met Suarez-Cortes and his brother, Rafael Suarez Jr., at a TopGolf on Sunday, and what started as consensual sex between the woman and Suarez Jr. allegedly turned into an assault.

Suarez-Cortes and his brother face second-degree felony charges and, potentially, 15 years in state prison.
