Manchester United have had a really shaky start to the 2023/24 season, having won just five of their first 11 games in all competitions. That includes losing both of their first two Champions League games while conceding 19 goals, which seems to have forced them into deciding a necessary signing next year but it could depend on the future of Harry Maguire.

Manchester United Make Decision On Priority Signing For 2024

Which Position Are United Aiming to Strengthen?

Fabrizio Romano has stated: “My understanding is” that the Red Devils have made it a “priority” to target the signing of a new centre-back to add more depth to their backline in 2024. There is still some uncertainty on exactly when this position will be strengthened, be it the winter transfer window or the next summer.

A few matters will be looked into by United when deciding to sign a new centre-back, the journalist also adds. He states that it will be important to see what happens in regards to Lisandro Martinez’s recovery from the foot injury that recently ruled him out of action for at least a few months.

Romano claims that if the Red Devils receive a solid proposal for the sale of Harry Maguire and can offload him in January, then they might look to sign a new centre-back to replace him. Otherwise, the club will likely be waiting until next year’s summer window to search for someone to bolster their backline.

Could United Be Involved in Any Transfer Activity in January?

While there is still no certainty of United indulging in any major transfer business in January, they might be willing to trim their squad down. Romano has also added that he expects exiled winger Jadon Sancho to leave in January, as he is not in Erik ten Hag’s plans anymore after lashing out at him last month.

He also adds that the Red Devils are likely to have internal discussions over signing a new winger after being able to offload the Englishman. But when it comes to a new centre-back, it looks like signing a new one in January depends on Maguire’s situation and if he accepts a move away from Old Trafford.
