Newcastle’s head of scouting Steven Nickson was in attendance for Atalanta’s 5-0 demolition of Frosinone at the Gewiss Stadium on Monday evening, with recent reports suggesting he was in Bergamo for a closer look at midfielder Ederson.

With Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali suspended until the summer and Bruno Guimaraes potentially in line for a move away from the North East of England, TMW suggest that the Magpies are on the lookout for midfield additions this transfer window.

Wednesday’s report details that Newcastle are prepared to make an offer for Ederson, but Atalanta have absolutely no interest in letting the 24-year-old leave midway through the season.

Ederson is considered to be one of the key players in Gian Piero Gasperini’s midfield and the club are not prepared to source a suitable replacement before the end of the January transfer window.

There are suggestions that Newcastle could make a fresh approach in the summer, when Atalanta would have more time to evaluate their options, but for now, Atalanta would like Ederson to stay where he is.

Ederson is attracting plenty of interest from within Serie A as well, with recent reports elsewhere suggesting that Juventus could offer Atalanta an enticing deal.

Asked about the Juventus transfer links by Sky Sport after Monday’s victory over Frosinone, Ederson himself commented: “It’s normal for certain situations to pop up when the transfer market opens.

“It happened in Brazil, it happened when I was at Salernitana. For me it is good this way, it means that I’m doing well and people are watching me. It always happens in the market, but the most important thing is to do well for Atalanta, and I feel like I’m doing very well here.”
