NY Red Bulls' Dante Vanzeir suspended, fined for racist language

Major League Soccer announced Thursday that New York Red Bulls forward Dante Vanzeir has been suspended six games "for the use of racist language" during this past Saturday's 1-1 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes.

The ban prohibits Vanzeir from participating in league matches, U.S. Open Cup contests, MLS Next Pro matchups and exhibition games.

"The League has also imposed an undisclosed fine and will require Vanzeir to participate in additional League-mandated training and education sessions, as well as a restorative practices program," MLS added. The Red Bulls did not say if they plan to punish Vanzeir any further. 

As noted by ESPN, Vanzeir made the unspecified comment toward San Jose's Jeremy Ebobisse in the 54th minute of Saturday's draw. Red Bulls head coach Gerhard Struber didn't instantly pull Vanzeir from the match and later admitted via an official statement that "the right decision would have been to immediately remove Dante Vanzeir from the game" based on "the information that I now know." 

Vanzeir apologized for his actions through that same release. 

"I want to sincerely apologize to the players of the Earthquakes," Vanzeir said. "I will do everything I can to be part of the change that needs to happen in this sport and our world. I also want to apologize to my teammates, coaches, the organization and our fans. I made a mistake and will take all the necessary steps to grow. I accept full responsibility for my actions. 

"While I did not intend to cause any harm or offense with my language, I know that I did and for that I am deeply sorry. I will agree to any suspension, fine and counseling that is handed down by Major League Soccer and the club. I will use this opportunity to better myself, reflect and dedicate my time and efforts to work with organizations that tackle racial injustice."

It's unclear if Vanzeir, who only joined the Red Bulls this past February, will ever again feature for the club. The 24-year-old who has tallied one goal across his six appearances and one start this MLS season had already indefinitely stepped away from the team before Thursday's developments. 

The Red Bulls head into the weekend 11th in the MLS Eastern Conference standings and next host the Houston Dynamo (seventh in the Western Conference) this Saturday night. It's believed Struber could receive a not-so-warm welcome from pockets of home supporters for what he failed to do last weekend:
