NYCFC, Red Bulls resume training Monday in New York
New Yorkers will be happy to hear that both the Red Bulls and NYCFC have resumed training on Monday, both MLS clubs announced. Both clubs have begun hosting individual workouts on a voluntary basis at their respective training facilities in the state.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Sunday that professional sports teams in the state are allowed to begin training with certain safety guidelines in place amid the coronavirus pandemic. MLS previously announced players could use outdoor training facilities beginning on May 6.
While a majority of MLS clubs have resumed training, it's unclear when the 2020 campaign will officially begin again. However, the league has proposed a plan to finish its season in Orlando with players arriving on June 1 for training and play beginning on July 1.
Games were initially paused in March due to the pandemic after just two weekends of action. Before the season was halted, the Red Bulls went 1-0-1 with four points and NYCFC went 0-2-0 with no points accrued.
Just four teams have a perfect record through two games, and it would be a shame for the third-place Red Bulls to not see an end to their season.
There's hope for MLS, though. Germany's Bundesliga returned to action recently, and Serie A in Italy is set to return in the coming weeks. The English Premier League also is looking at a start date in June, so an MLS return isn't completely out of question.
