Unfair comparisons…It’s a debate that inevitably would happen. Who’s better, Odsonne Edouard or Kyogo Furuhashi? Celtic social media has been awash with it recently.
When Moussa Dembele was starring for Celtic he was dubbed by many as the best striker to Don the hoops since the King of Kings himself, Henrik Larsson. when his fellow Frenchman Odsonne Edouard took over his striking position he was dubbed the best since Moussa.
Now Eddy has departed the baton has been past to Kyogo Furuhashi. It’s a vicious circle. It’s what football supporters do, compare past stars to present ones. Or in this instance make a case as to whom is better.
It’s completely unfair. Eddy and Kyogo for one thing are two completely different footballers. In style and personality. They couldn’t be more different. The only thing they have in common is that they produce the goods in the Hoops, or in Eddy’s case, did.
Eddy scored 88 goals in 179 goals for the club. Winning seven honours. He scored vital championship winning goals. Who could forget his stunner at Ibrox as we won with just 10 men? Or his double at Celtic Park as we thumped our rivals 5-0 to clinch the Title? Not to mention his double in the Scottish cup final against Hearts that clinched the Treble Treble?
He also done his bit in Europe scoring 15 goals in 42 games. He was a class act and it was a sad day when he left to join Crystal Palace.
Kyogo is just as important to the current Celtic side as Eddy was in his day. The Japanese striker has scored 46 goals in just 72 games thus far. Five of those coming in Europe in just 15 games. He scored a brace in consecutive league cup finals as we emerged victorious in both. His goals helped us clinch last seasons title, despite him being injured for a large chunk of the campaign. This term he’s remained fit helping fire us into pole position for yet another title. He’s the club and country’s top scorer with 26 goals in just 39 games, with more undoubtedly to follow.
If Kyogo stays at the club, fingers crossed for another couple of years he will no doubt surpass French Eddy’s tally. Maybe even his honours tally too. Maybe just then we can debate who’s the better player. For now we should just Remember Eddy’s contribution to the club and enjoy Kyogo while he’s still here.
Comparisons between the two are unwarranted. Eddy is the past and Kyogo is the present. Let’s just agree that both are class acts who have done or still are doing their best for Celtic football club.
The only regret for Celtic supporters is that we didn’t get to see them perform together on a regular basis. They would have been quite the partnership.
