Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has set Erik ten Hag a clear target to ensure he has a successful first season as manager.

The former United midfielder lifted countless silverware under Sir Alex Ferguson, including a remarkable 11 Premier League titles.

However, since the departure of the greatest football manager, United’s quest to continue winning trophies has been an ongoing struggle. Next year will mark 10 years without lifting the league title, whilst rivals Manchester City have dominated the top division in that time.

Their last trophy was the Europa League back in 2017 under Jose Mourinho, who also delivered a League Cup. Whilst they’re not the most lucrative ones in world football, it was still accolades added to the long list of United’s achievements.

Ole Gunnar Solskjear’s managerial reign ended with no additions to the trophy cabinet, despite coming achingly close to another Europa League after falling short on a penalty shootout.

Scholes outlines goal for Ten Hag

Scholes said (via Manchester Evening News): “A big day out this season is something we’re looking forward to. Hopefully it can come. We’ve not won a trophy for, what, five years now, so if Ten Hag can get an FA Cup or a League Cup in his first season, I think it will be a big step forward.”

The Reds are currently in all competitions. Their return to action will be on December 21 against Burnley in the Round of 16 of the Carabao Cup.
