Manchester United striker Joe Hugill says he always envisaged scoring on his debut for League One strugglers Burton Albion, but he did not expect to find the net after just three minutes on the pitch.

Hugill is on loan at the Brewers until the end of the season and his first goal came on Monday night in a 3-2 defeat against Derby County, despite only having two training sessions with his new team-mates.

After coming on after 62 minutes, Hugill raced clear of the Derby County defence to fire home on 65 minutes to make the score 2-2.

However, Burton Albion conceded again in stoppage time as Derby walked away with three points.

Asked about whether he had imagined scoring on his debut, Hugill said (as per Manchester Evening News): “Maybe not as quick. I always imagine the perfect start for me.

“Three minutes in to get the goal [is] very good. Then it’s about composing yourself again and try to get the next one. Sometimes you get too long to think about it, but as soon as I checked my shoulder, I knew I had the time to compose myself and slot it in the corner.”

It was still a good night for United loanee Hugill even though the result wasn’t the type he wanted.

Not only did he make his debut, but he also opened his account in a Burton Albion shirt.

Hugill feels like he is settling in nicely, adding: “I’ve really enjoyed it, all the lads have been very good with me and helped me settle in.

“Obviously the new manager [Martin Paterson] came in at pretty much the same time as well so he’s been trying to get his ideas across. Being an ex-forward himself, he’s been showing what he did so I can improve my game.”

Here’s to many more goals for Hugill before the end of the season!
