Refs chief Howard Webb admits VAR should have been involved after Reading striker Andy Carroll's tackle on Manchester United Christian Eriksen.

Carroll committed three fouls in 11 minutes in the second-half of United's FA Cup fourth round win over Reading yet he was inexplicably not booked for the first, a scissor tackle on Eriksen. Eriksen left Old Trafford on crutches and has been ruled out for three months with an ankle injury.

Six minutes after Carroll injured Eriksen, forced off in the 57th minute, he was booked for fouling Tyrell Malacia in the 60th minute and received a second caution for ploughing into Casemiro in the 65th minute.

PGMOL chief Webb said: "We have acknowledged publicly that the tackle by Fabinho should have led to a VAR check. The referee showed a yellow card and VAR did not feel it was a clear foul.

"We feel that it was wrong. VAR should have been involved and trumped the decision.

"You can argue the same with the tackle from Andy Carroll on Eriksen, which was not a good tackle.

"There is an element of subjectivity in many tackles, but some stand out, and then we have to get involved."
