After years of waiting, Paris Saint-Germain was finally able to sign Kylian Mbappe to a multi-year contract extension deal. Ahead of PSG’s Ligue 1 home fixture against Metz, the reigning Ligue 1 champions announced that Mbappe will stay put with the club for three more seasons.

In speaking in his post-match press conference (via L’Equipe) after PSG’s 5-0 win over Metz, manager Mauricio Pochettino provided his first reaction to Mbappe signing the key agreement. He noted that even he did not know about the deal until just moments before the announcement.

“For Mbappe, I knew a few minutes before the official communication,” Pochettino said. “His extension is very important for the club and we are very happy.

“I followed the negotiations since I arrived a year and a half ago, there were different phases. … When we arrived, he was a very criticized player in France who did not always manage to express his full potential, so I am very happy with his progress.”

Mbappe shined in the fixture on the day, notching a hat-trick en route to finishing the campaign as the leading goal-scorer in Ligue 1.

For now, it remains to be seen whether Mbappe will be playing under Pochettino next season. The Argentine still has a mere one more season remaining on his contract at PSG.
