Premier League's Newcastle United upset in FA Cup by third-tier Cambridge United

Cambridge United pulled off a titanic upset Saturday morning when it defeated Newcastle United, 1-0, in the third round of the FA Cup.

Joe Ironside scored the only goal of the match, finding the back of the net during a scramble in the box in the 56th minute.

Cambridge United competes in EFL League One, the third tier of the English football league system, after earning promotion from EFL League Two in 2021. Newcastle United is a member of the top-tier Premier League, although the club is currently in danger of relegation with only 11 points through 19 matches played.

The upset victory didn't come easy for Cambridge United, who survived 23 shots and nine shots on target from Newcastle United. There were also 12 corner kicks for Newcastle United -- and just one for Cambridge United -- including a 94th minute try that was miraculously deflected away by goalie Dimitar Mitov.

There were a few other sizable upsets Saturday in the FA Cup. Kidderminster Harriers of the sixth-tier National League North managed to eliminate Reading of the second-tier EFL Championship with a 2-1 victory. Also, Huddersfield Town of the Championship knocked out the Premier League's Burnley with a 2-1 win.
