Noel Whelan has tipped Tottenham to sign Stefan de Vrij as a partner to Cristian Romero and he reckons their partnership would be a legendary one.

Spurs have been linked with a move for the Dutchman who played under Antonio Conte at Inter Milan last season.

For now, it is just rumoured, but things could be going on behind the scenes and if Conte has identified the defender as a player he wants, Daniel Levy would likely make the signing happen.

Whelan is certain that partnering De Vrij and Romero would be a combination that would deliver for Spurs.

“De Vrij and Cristian Romero could become Spurs legends like Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen,” he told Football Insider.

“Alderweireld and Vertonghen are two legends of the club; they were solid at the back. They were a formidable partnership, and that’s what you need.

“When you think about these famous partnerships throughout the years, Man United had Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister, Arsenal had Tony Adams and Martin Keown. They stick in the mind because they were solid, good defenders.

“And that’s what Spurs need to find. They need that partnership to be rugged at the back, bordering on horrible.

“De Vrij has showed he is a worldbeater playing at a very high level.”

The Boy Hotspur Says

Spurs have struggled to get a good defensive partnership for a while now and Romero has looked like a class signing.

The likes of Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier, who he met at Spurs, hardly complement him.

De Vrij has been delivering fine performances for Inter season after season and might be the best player to support Romero at the back at Spurs.

Both defenders have had spells in Serie A and that could make working together and communicating with each other easier.
