Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane won't resign after Shakhtar loss
Spanish giants Real Madrid clinching the 2019-20 La Liga title in July now feels like a distant memory.
Real fell to fourth in the league table following a shocking 2-1 loss to Alaves (13th) on Saturday, and Los Blancos are now in danger of missing out on the knockout stages of the Champions League after a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Shakhtar Donetsk dropped Real to third in Group B on seven points.
Despite these results widely deemed unacceptable by supporters, Real boss Zinedine Zidane was defiant when speaking with media members shortly after Tuesday's debacle.
"No. Not at all. I won't resign," Zidane said about willingly leaving his post before the weekend, per Alex Kirkland and Rodrigo Faez of ESPN. "We'll keep going... In the first half we were really good. I think we deserved to score first, that would have changed things. Their goals hurt us a lot."
Zidane continued:
"We've had complicated moments and we always will. We're on a bad run of results. That's the reality. But we have to keep going... I think we prepared well, we played a great first half. We have one game left and we have to win and think about going through."
Real can save face in Europe's biggest club competition next week. They host group leaders Borussia Monchengladbach on Dec. 9. A win would put Real through to the next round regardless of what happens in the Shakhtar-Inter Milan match played that same day.
