Real Madrid, Juventus crash out of Champions League

Two of the giants of club football that won domestic honors for the 2019-20 season won't participate in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

On Friday, Manchester City eliminated Spanish champions Real Madrid, while Lyon shocked Serie A winner Juventus with an aggregate draw that saw the Ligue 1 side through to the round of eight on away goals.

The absence of Welsh attacker Gareth Bale from Zinedine Zidane's side dominated Real headlines before Friday's encounter at the Etihad Stadium, but it was a pair of defensive disasters that sunk Los Blancos after they entered the encounter down 2-1 on aggregate.

A costly giveaway gifted City's Raheem Sterling with a goal in the ninth minute that propelled the hosts to a 3-1 overall advantage:

A second avoidable blunder in the defensive third played Gabriel Jesus through into the box in the 68th minute, and Jesus made no mistake in increasing City's aggregate lead to 4-2, where the scored remained until the final whistle:

Lyon kicked off at the Allianz Stadium up 1-0, and a controversial penalty decision allowed Memphis Depay to double that lead from the spot 12 minutes into play:

Cristiano Ronaldo equalized on the evening from the spot two minutes from halftime:

Fifteen minutes after the break, Ronaldo completed his brace with a left-footed rocket that put Juventus within reach of erasing Lyon's away-goal tiebreaker:

Juve couldn't locate a third tally, however, and France's Cinderella danced on to the quarterfinals.

Per CBS Sports, City and Lyon will meet in the round of eight on Aug. 15 at 3 pm ET.
