Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are the kind of players that Chelsea should be trying to sign this summer, according to Joe Cole.

Chelsea have made 38 signings across the past four transfer windows.

The majority of those new recruits have been under the age of 23 but Cole believes that his former team now need to add some experience.

Midfielders Modric, 38, and Kroos, 34, are both under contract with Real Madrid until June 30, after which they may move on free transfers.

Cole thinks that either player would be an ideal addition to Chelsea's young squad.

Speaking to talkSPORT this week, Cole said: "I'd be looking to bring in some experienced players who set the tone. Is Luka Modric out of [contract]? Does he want to come and play in the Premier League for one more year?

"He's still doing bits at Real Madrid. And how much has he helped [Eduardo] Camavinga, [Aurelien] Tchouameni, [Federico] Valverde? He would've had such an influence on them as players.

"Toni Kroos is 34. Does he want to test himself at his age? Coming over here and helping out this young [Chelsea] squad. They're just names I've thrown off the top of my head, I don't know their situation."

Modric is a player that has been firmly on Chelsea's radar for almost two decades.

Chelsea scouted the Croatian playmaker while he was at Dinamo Zagreb, before he moved to Tottenham in 2008.

Spurs then rejected a £40 million offer for Modric from Chelsea in August 2011.

Modric moved to Madrid 12 months later and has since won 24 trophies with the Spanish giants, including five UEFA Champions League titles.
