Bruce Arena is a candidate to replace Wayne Rooney as the manager at D.C. United, The Athletic reported Friday.

A source confirmed the club's interest in the former New England Revolution and U.S. men's national team coach but told The Athletic that the first priority is hiring a new general manager.

Rooney resigned earlier this month after the United were eliminated from MLS Cup playoff contention. General manager Lucy Rushton departed the club after the 2022 season, leaving a vacancy that was never filled.

Arena, 72, resigned from the Revolution on Sept. 9 in the wake of a six-week investigation into allegations that he used "inappropriate and insensitive" remarks with the team.

He was the inaugural coach of D.C. United from 1996-98, winning MLS Cup titles in 1996 and 1997 before winning three more championships (2011, 2012 and 2014) with the LA Galaxy.

He coached the USMNT from 1998-2006 and again from 2016-17.

Arena is the all-time MLS leader in coaching victories (250), MLS Cups (five), Coach of the Year awards (four) and Supporters' Shields (four).
