Report: UEFA likely to move Champions League final from Istanbul, possibly to England

Manchester City and Chelsea supporters may be able to safely attend the Champions League final scheduled for May 29 between those two Premier League clubs, after all.

ESPN's Mark Ogden reported Friday afternoon that UEFA is "likely" to move the final from Istanbul, Turkey after that country was placed on the United Kingdom's "red list" for travel restrictions. Under this protocol, anybody returning to the UK from Turkey would have to quarantine at an airport hotel for 10 days.

Ogden explained that UEFA and the English Football Association are holding talks over hosting the game somewhere in England. The home venues of Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa have been mentioned as potential locations for the game that can't be held at Wembley Stadium because it is hosting the English Football League Playoffs that same weekend. However, UEFA is also open to holding the match in a neutral country such as Portugal, where fans could travel without having to isolate upon their returns.

Per the Agence France-Presse (h/t Yahoo Sports), the UK government will permit football stadiums to either welcome crowds of up to 10,000 patrons or fill to 25% capacity for events starting May 17. Up to 21,000 supporters are expected to attend the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Leicester City on May 15.
