Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo de Paul is unhappy with how VAR intervened to rule out his side’s penalty award on Tuesday night.
Atleti were narrowly beaten on Tuesday evening in their Champions League clash with Liverpool.
Los Rojiblancos came back from a two-goal deficit thanks to a brace from Antoine Griezmann before the Frenchman was sent off for a high footed challenge.
Two penalty decisions went on to decide the game. First, a poor challenge from Mario Hermoso allowed Mo Salah to put Liverpool ahead, and it looked as though Atleti would have the chance to reply when Jose Maria Gimenez was brought down in the area.
But after reviewing the incident on the monitor, referee Daniel Siebert decided to overturn the decision and Diego Simeone‘s men had to settle for a defeat.
The incident was a huge talking point, and it’s one Atletico Madrid fielder de Paul was not happy with.
He told Movistar: “The referee decided to signal for a penalty, there is contact, and normally when there is contact VAR does not have the right to interviene with the referee and that has happened tonight.”
Speaking about the result generally, the midfielder added: “I don’t know if it’s good or bad, but obviously the red card decided the game.
“Today there were two great teams that put on a spectacular game. Competing like this, it will be very difficult for teams to beat us.”
