Roma are nearing an agreement with Gaetano Castrovilli, whose contract with Fiorentina is about to expire. He recently scored his first goal in over a year after undergoing knee surgery. He has played just 200 minutes this season, which he mostly spent rehabbing.

According to Radio Radio (via Calciomercato), the Giallorossi tendered their offer to onboard him on a free. The result of his medicals will obviously be pivotal to determining whether he’ll sign or not.

On top of Roma, Lazio have also displayed some interest in Castrovilli, but their rivals are currently in the lead. The midfielder was supposed to depart last summer, but his move to Bournemouth collapsed after the physical tests revealed a substantial knee problem.

The 27-year-old went under the knife afterward and returned in March. Fiorentina struggled to come to terms with him on a new contract before the whole ordeal and didn’t re-open talks to do so lately. He has been a regular for them since 2019. The playmaker has racked up 128 appearances, 14 goals, and 8 assists with the Viola. He has four caps with Italy.

Our Take on Roma and Castrovilli

Given their poor finances, they’ll have to take some chances on cheap signings with an element of risk, injury-wise in his case. It wouldn’t be surprising if other teams joined the fray. He has looked fine since coming back, and he was a very sound contributor before his physical problems, which are hopefully in the rearview mirror.
