Sepp Blatter suggests U.S. could host 2022 FIFA World Cup

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter has suggested the United States be the host country for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, according to CBS Sports' Roger Gonzalez. Why? Well, because FIFA executives were reportedly bribed to vote for Qatar to host the World Cup in 2020 -- and Qatar won the bid.

While there's no indication that the United States would be considered to host the World Cup, Blatter makes a good point about the tournament being held in Europe again.

"Germany could do it. But this would mean the World Cup being staged in Europe again after 2018," Blatter told German publication Bild, according to Gonzalez. "Europe therefore would not be first choice.

"Fortunately, the 2022 World Cup will only have 32 teams and not 48 as [FIFA president Gianni Infantino] had planned. The organizational effort would not be bigger than 2018.

"The United States could do it instead of 2026. They are capable. It's not rocket science."

The U.S. has all the right things for a strong World Cup bid: the infrastructure, the venues, the fans. Everything is essentially lined up for FIFA, they just need to make the call. 

However, considering the US is co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico, we probably won't see them host in 2022.

It's a nice thought, though, but would they really move the tournament out of Qatar? If the economy continues to struggle then it's possible, but otherwise it probably won't be changed.
