Something has to change at Chelsea after they manage to do something that they have not done since 2003, when Roman Abramovich first took charge at the club.

That is the view of one of the top Chelsea reporters this week as he analysis Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester City in The FA Cup semi-final on Saturday night, missing out on another chance to win silverware this season.

This is the first time since Roman Abramovich took control in 2003 that the club have gone successive seasons without a trophy, and Simon Johnson of The Athletic says that as a result, something needs to change.

Abramovich has been long gone now and it’s been a couple of years with new owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake in charge at the club. You cannot deny that they have come into the club with huge ambitions and have invested huge amounts of money into the first team squad, and this is actually where many have aimed their criticism at. They’ve spent all that money but are about to end to season without winning a trophy again, and they are currently still only sat in 9th place in the Premier League.

They could still enjoy some form of European qualification this season though, with that very much in the hands of Mauricio Pochettino and the players now. But even if they do now get Europa League, Blues fans will not be fully content and the pressure will still very much be there with questions being asked about this season, where we have seen some terrible Chelsea performances and results.

Whatever needs to change, whether it’s the manager, the decision makers at the club, or a change of transfer strategy, Chelsea need to improve again next season and push forward, otherwise things could get pretty ugly for the new ownership.
