Sounders unveil secondary jersey inspired by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jimi Hendrix

The Seattle Sounders have decided to honor one of the greatest guitar players of all time with their new secondary kit for the 2021 season.

The 2019 MLS Cup champions' new secondary kit is a purple-and-orange ode to the late Jimi Hendrix, who was born in Seattle in 1942. The Sounders say the kit was inspired by Hendrix's "love of color and psychedelic patterns."

The jersey features Hendrix's signature stamped on the bottom and the lyrics "We got to stand, side by side" on the neck tape from his posthumous 1997 album "First Rays of the New Rising Sun."

"In his short life, Jimi gifted us with his talent, and, even more so, with his generous and loving spirit," Sounders Owner and President of Business Operations Peter Tomozawa said in a statement. "We wanted this kit to embody that colorful, creative personality, while also using it as a way to further good, just as Jimi used his own platform."

Proceeds from the first 30 days of jersey sales will be donated to five non-profit organizations: The Jimi Hendrix Park Foundation, the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP), the Northwest African American Museum (NAAM), RAVE Foundation and the Tacoma Public Schools Indian Education Program.
