Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson thinks Manchester United should steer away from a move for World Cup star Cody Gakpo.

Manchester United are being heavily linked with a move for the PSV Eindhoven and Netherlands forward ahead of the January transfer window.

It is believed that terms had been agreed between United and Gakpo last summer, but Erik ten Hag opted to sign Antony instead. Perhaps the plan was to wait until January – or next summer – to sign the Dutch goalscorer?

Gakpo has continued his impressive form this term, scoring 13 goals for PSV and a further 3 for the Netherlands at the World Cup. His potential arrival could see Ten Hag start games with a fluid attacking front three.

However, Eriksson doesn’t think Gakpo is the right profile of player for United at the moment and suggests we need a number nine like Harry Kane. He still claims that Gakpo could flourish in the Premier League.

“Cody Gakpo would be very good for the Premier League and I’m certain he wouldn’t need that much time to adapt to the Premier League,” Eriksson told Betway, as quoted by the Metro.

“The thing is that many clubs will have been watching him thirty or forty times now.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has gone now and Manchester United need an out and out number nine and Harry Kane seems the perfect fit.

“Kane could be impossible to get but they have to get something similar. Right now I don’t think Gakpo is the profile they need.”

Gakpo could become Europe’s most wanted in January if he keeps scoring goals in Qatar. They face the United States in the round of 16.
